3D rendering of an interactive IoT advertising poster in a subway station – IOX case study for BBDO

Prototyping & Showcase

A POSTER THAT REACTS TO TOUCH AND SOUND

For a BBDO industry event on advertising and sound, IOX built an interactive advertising poster as a working prototype.

Project / Client

For the music event Soundlounge in Düsseldorf, IOX designed an interactive advertising poster for BBDO and realised it as a working prototype. BBDO Düsseldorf is a communications agency for designing customer experiences. The project covered design and innovation.

The Situation

BBDO wanted to present a new advertising medium at the industry event Soundlounge. It was looking for a prototyping partner able to demonstrate how the physical and digital worlds can be connected through interactive elements.

The Key Question

How do you build an advertising poster that reacts to sensory stimuli and combines print with digital technology?

What We Built

IOX handled rapid prototyping for the poster. Over several iterations, prototypes were built, tested and optimised for the first showcases. Hardware development was also part of the work.

PRODUCT: In close collaboration with BBDO, IOX’s hardware and software experts developed the Soundlounge Poster. It combines print and digital technology in a new way, using microphone sensors, a rear-projection system and IoT and M2M technology in an end-to-end hardware and software integration.

SYSTEM, first version 2016: A special microphone picks up ambient sounds, and a microscopic rear-projection process converts them into graphic impulses. Depending on the sound intensity, the poster plays different visuals and gradually reveals the colourful advertising message as passers-by walk past. The poster makes volume visible.

SYSTEM, second version 2019: When touched, different coloured areas send impulses to a microchip, which plays individual music. The poster creates sounds on touch.

The Result

The result is a fully functional prototype. It combines print and digital technology and showed the potential of the new advertising medium.

The new advertising medium is presented more effectively: the poster appeals directly to the senses.

It enabled further development from 2016 to 2019 – from visible sound to a poster that plays sound.

“Thanks to the IOX Lab with Robert Jänisch & team, we were able to merge paper and high tech in an innovative way. Quickly and pragmatically, we realised, tested and optimised several prototypes for the first showcases together with the IOX Lab.”
