RFID tracking module for mechanical engineering

PARTS THAT REPORT THEMSELVES

A world-leading engine manufacturer has its components captured automatically – from a small pilot to a much larger expansion stage.

Project / Client

The client is a world-leading manufacturer of large engines and propulsion systems.

IOX implemented an RFID project for this client. It ranges from an initial pilot to integration into the existing inventory systems.

The Situation

Physical components in production could not be identified and tracked automatically. The client lacked the in-house capability for an automatic capture system.

Business processes were to become faster and more transparent through automation. Engine components were to be inventoried and tracked efficiently.

The Key Question

How can RFID capture be set up so that it feeds the data into an existing system?

A reader alone solves nothing. Only the connection to a data model turns a captured number into usable information – and that data model has to be understood across the entire group.

What We Built

PRODUCT: IOX started with RFID capture for components as a small pilot. Individual components received RFID tags with unique serial numbers. This was followed by a much larger expansion stage with additional tags and read points.

SYSTEM: IOX built the reader and gateway infrastructure for automatic capture. A decoder based on the global GS1 standard converts the captured data into a standardised data model. In addition, IOX developed a web front end with a database for evaluating and managing the data.

TEAM: IOX trained the client’s employees so that the client can continue the inventory process and the use of the solution independently.

The Result

The RFID capture system went live and was scaled from the pilot to a much larger expansion stage.

Data integration improved. Captured components arrive via a GS1 decoder in a format that connects to the group’s inventory systems. This accelerated the maintenance processes.

Predictive maintenance became possible. The client can anticipate failure probabilities and avoid production downtime.
